December 30, 2005: Calling for Action

Des Moines Register: As Months Pass, No One Is Held Responsible - column by Ms. Rekha Basu

(We didn't contact the media -- Ms. Basu called us & others involved. The "600+" people (friends, family, and classmates) came from all over northwest Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Illinois, Kansas, Montana, Wisconsin, and other states, not just from Sutherland. Overall, Ms. Basu did a thorough & thoughtful job of telling the story, given the space she had.)

Several motions have been filed in the last couple of weeks by both Dickinson County and Dusty's attorney.  Since his indictment, Dustin Lokhorst (a.k.a. April  2006:

The trial is scheduled to begin on September 26, 2006. RE: Dustin Lokhorst (a.k.a. Dustin De Raad), charged with child endangerment resulting in death, a class B felony.

Dusty is currently posting pictures of his yellow bike (the one he crashed), and talking about how much he loves riding.  [Just one of several examples can be found here: http://www.bikepics.com/members/dustin1866/

Witnesses indicate Dusty's first speed radar reading on June 17, 2005, was at 52mph. He raced even faster past the radar on subsequent runs until he crashed, killing Anthony.

November 2006:

In the homicide of 13-year-old Anthony Lee Vos on June 17, 2005, Dustin Lokhorst (a.k.a. Dustin De Raad) has pleaded guilty to the following crimes related to the original felony charge of Child Endangerment Resulting in Death:

  • Involuntary Manslaughter
  • Driving on the wrong side of a 2-way highway, resulting in death
  • No valid drivers license, resulting in death
  • Failure to maintain control, resulting in death
  • Speeding (47+ in a 35), resulting in death
  • Violation of the conditions of a restricted license, resulting in death
  • Careless driving, resulting in death
  • Failure to prove security against liability, in a wreck resulting in death

Public records show that after his arrest & conviction for manslaughter in the death of 13-year-old Anthony Vos, Dustin Lokhorst continues to be arrested and, in most cases, convicted for nearly 100 felonies, misdemeanors, protection orders, and civil actions in Iowa & California, including (but not limited to) the following: battering/resisting/obstructing police officers; drug & weapons possession; multiple counts of domestic abuse, stalking, & harassment; tampering with witnesses; vandalism, multiple counts of reckless driving & excessive speeding, and multiple counts of operating without registration and/or a valid driver's license.

Of these charges, a handful of cases are pending at any one time, and only a handful have ever been dismissed. Lokhorst has been found guilty of all other charges & actions brought against him. Dustin Lokhorst has also crashed motorcycles at least 4 more times since killing Anthony in 2005.

He continues to post videos on YouTube of himself doing illegal high-speed & high-risk motorcycle stunts on open roads where he puts other people at risk.

Nov. 20, 2006

On November 20, 2006, Dustin Lokhorst (a.k.a. Dustin De Raad) was sentenced to serve a maximum of 2 years for manslaughter in the death of Anthony Vos. He was also sentenced to 30 days each for the 7 related misdemeanors from his wreck on June 17, to be served concurrently with the 2-year term.

In addition, he has been ordered to pay approx. $11,000 in restitution to the crime victims' fund, as well as court costs and attorney fees. He was taken into custody Monday to be transferred to the Oakdale prison/processing facility near Iowa City.

The court transcripts will show the judge recognized that this wreck was not one tragic mistake in an otherwise decent record, but rather a predictable result of Dustin's chronic recklessness, disregard for safety, and disrespect for the law.
